When I was about nine or ten I discovered Captain Underpants books by Dav Pilkey. A series of children’s books that I felt incredibly inspiring to read as it focused on two children who wrote their own comic books about a superhero called Captain Underpants. You could actually read their comics in the stories and what was great about them was they looked like they’d been made by kids with wobbly drawings and bad grammar. This gave me extra confidence to make my own comics and not worry so much. Even now when Dav Pilkey brings out a new book I’ll still go and buy it! This is because I find myself feeling excited and inspired just as I did when I was a kid. And it just so happens, there’s a new one out today!

Six years ago this week I arrived on the Isle of Man for a gap year where I did youth and childrens work in schools and churches with a charity called Scripture Union Ministries Trust. Shortly after we started we had a welcome evening for the new gappers and lots of youth, parents and others connected to SUMT came along. We were asked to do short biographies that would be displayed at the evening. I naturally drew a comic instead!

Last night I watched the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo performed at Edinburgh Castle, and it inspired me to draw a castle. Castles are quite varied so I think I’ll do another one at some point!

Daft Character #3! My hope is that there will be quite a wide variety of styles for each character I come up with!

And now for something completely different! A portrait of Robin Williams done in preparation for my weekly Drawing Class where we are currently doing portraits. I rarely do ‘realistic’ work so it was nice to give this a go! I’ve decided that one day a week I’ll do more of a random post, whether it be an old drawing I’ve found, someone else’s work, a video, a review or a portrait of Robin Williams. Though I think I might change the order around next week a little. See you Monday!

Daft Character #2. I tried to add a little more detail and a prop this time. I think this one came out really well.

Wednesday is Tribute day! Each Wednesday I will draw a character from something I am a fan of. This is Smiley Bone, one of the main characters from one of my favourite comics called Bone by Jeff Smith. I had the pleasure of meeting Jeff at the Lakes Comic Art Festival in 2014.

Tuesday is Buildings day! Each Tuesday I will post a different building I have drawn. Today I have drawn a little house. I really want to get better at drawing buildings so I think this will give me the space to do that!
