buildings-8

This week’s building is a little church building. I say ‘church building’ because even though we call them churches, the Church is actually the people of God, not the building they traditionally meet in. Even though I attend a church in a church building, some Churches meet in houses, pubs, uni buildings or community centres. It doesn’t really matter where Christians meet, because God is with them whenever they meet together.

Daft Character #15! This week I’m planning to ‘ink’ all my drawings in pencil. This is how many comic artists ‘ink’ their work, and I’ve always wanted to give it a fair shot!

tribute-7

This week’s tribute is to Bill Watterson’s Calvin and Hobbes. I can safely say this was the hardest tribute I’ve done so far. Mixed with the fact that Watterson has such a distinct style, I was also using the brush pen which helped to emulate the style, but I’m still learning how to use it. I discovered Calvin and Hobbes when I was a child and quickly fell in love with the characters, style and world that Watterson had created. Growing up I bought many of the books, but when I was a teenager I was given a complete box set in three books. I only finished reading it last year, as it’s so big, but no doubt I’ll be reading it again soon enough!

Daft Character #14! Using the brush pen again, I think I was able to get a nice flow in the lines of the character, but I still don’t feel I have as much control as I do with a normal fine liner.

third-class-mail-logo

This was a logo I created for a comic submission I did in early 2015. Third Class Mail was about two postmen who deliver letters and parcels to other dimensions. I still really like the idea, but looking back at the submission I sent, I don’t think it was as good as it could have been. I might give the idea another shot in some form in the future.

This week’s building was quite fun to construct. I used different shapes and elements from different skyscrapers, but it still reminds me of a specific skyscraper. Not sure which though. I was going to ink it with my new brush pen, but I realised it needed a finer point, so I used a new fine liner instead. I quite like how the building came out!

Daft Character #13! I bought a brush fine liner pen thing over the weekend and decided to give it a go over this week. I quite like how it gives a brush-like effect but I still have almost the same amount of control as a normal fine liner.

tribute-6

This week’s Tribute is Space Raoul (and Quibble) created by Jamie Smart. Space Raoul first appeared in the children’s segment of the Sunday Times, before appearing in The Dandy, where I first encountered him. In 2008 Jamie was putting a book together of all the strips and wanted fan art to go in it. I emailed him some and he put it in the book! I was proud to have my first published art work. Jamie went on to draw Desperate Dan in The Dandy, Rodger the Dodger in The Beano and currently draws the hilarious Bunny Vs. Money in The Phoenix (a weekly story comic). He’s also been very helpful when I’ve emailed him on questions about making comics, so thanks Jamie!

Daft Character #12! I tried a bolder shadow for today’s character. I really like how it came out, but I wonder if I could have made some of the shadows a little larger. Overall though, a nice bold character I think.
