This week’s Tribute is to The Dandy’s Desperate Dan created by Dudley D. Watkins. This is the first time I have tried to draw someone else’s character in a different style. Desperate Dan has mostly been drawn in a more realistic (though still cartoon) style up until shortly before The Dandy ceased publication where Jamie Smart took over and used a more cartoon-like style. Desperate Dan is possibly my favourite humour comic character, and can still be found in Dandy annuals and summer specials.

Daft Character #22! Apparently, I can’t stop drawing chairs as one snuck into today’s Daft Character. I’m doing colour on my comic pitch today and it’s very difficult. I just find it so hard to choose the right colour. Well, let’s carry on! 😉

The last two days I’ve ran a holiday club in Funky Aardvark where the children have been making comic covers. When I was growing up that was the part of comic making I enjoyed the most. Today I had some points where I just wanted to leave the kids to get on with it, so I had time to do a cover of a comic I used to make when I was a kid called The Tangle. It was nice to draw some old characters again!

My new Tuesday blog posts will be Objects, replacing Buildings for the time being. I started with chairs, and I will be doing a lot of ‘house’ objects, as I want to get better at furnishing rooms that I draw.

Daft Character #21! I don’t ‘do’ Halloween but somehow a scared character came out of my pen anyway! I hope and pray all stay safe today on a day when a small amount of youths feel they can make chaos. See you in November!

This week’s Tribute is Dennis the Menace from the longest running weekly comic The Beano. I was always more of a Dandy man myself growing up, but I enjoyed both comics, and now as an adult I can see why The Beano (now titled simply ‘Beano’ after a redesign last month) was the more successful comic. The Dandy sadly folded in 2012, but Beano continues going strong, with a new Dennis and Gnasher animated series coming next year.

Daft Character #20! Wow, I’ve been doing these for ten weeks now! My days seem to be getting busier, so it’s harder to find time to do these, but I still haven’t missed a day yet!

This week’s building is a cool spy base. I’ve been meaning to do a spy base since I started these, so it was good to get one done as my final building for a while. Next week I am going to start doing ‘objects’ instead which should be a nice change!

Next week I will be running a holiday club on Tuesday and Wednesday for children on half-term holiday. If you have children or know children in school years 3-6 that like comics and cartoons, then let them know! It will be ran at art shop Funky Aardvark between 10 and 12 in the morning. Booking is essential.
