Daft Character #19! A high-brow snake…

This week’s Tribute is to Shigeru Miyamoto’s Super Mario, the star of many video games I have played that have been created over the last thirty years. I grew up on Nintendo video games and game systems, and yesterday a new Nintendo system, the ‘Nintendo Switch’ was announced along with footage of a brand new Mario game that looks incredible from only a few seconds. Even though I recently got a PS4, my heart will always be with Nintendo.

Daft Character #18! This character came out quite similar to my Rising Juggernauts, that I created for a comic pitch. If you wanted to read some of my comics please go to the ‘comics’ part of my website: benbernard-smith.com

Feeling much better today, so here’s a little old fashioned corner shop, as this week’s building!

As I’m not feeling too well today, I thought I would do the ‘random’ post today. I decided to put all of September and late August’s Daft Characters on one page. It’s quite nice to see the variation of each design all together.

Daft Character #17! Returned to the fine liner this week and it feels great. Pencil was fun, but it was harder to put down a strong line. Maybe fine liner is here to stay…

This week’s Tribute is to Kazu Kibuishi’s ‘Amulet’ books, where I have drawn the character Miskit, a robot rabbit. ‘Amulet’ is like the Harry Potter of the comic book world, a fantasy series about a girl called Emily who with her brother enters into another world where she finds out she is a Stonekeeper, and with the help of other humans, robots and creatures, can save that world from destruction. It’s been a great inspiration on me in terms of story and visuals.

Daft Character #16! I drew this character in pencil, like Monday’s. I think pencil works well for some drawings, like my church building I drew on Tuesday, but for simpler line drawings like this, I think pen is a much better tool!

Here are a couple of robots I created for a CBBC pitch I took part in whilst at university. They were to be in animated segments as part of a space themed game show, where the audience could learn about scientific theories brought up in the show. In case you can’t tell, the idea was that the red robot was old and cantankerous and the blue robot was new and excitable. As far as I know, none of the ideas pitched went forward at that pitching session, yet it was interesting to take part in, and I learnt greatly from it.
